This note examines the issues surrounding transport biofuels in the UK, ranging from production, application, impact and emissions. It surveys both 'first' and 'second' generation biofuels that typically have lower lifecycle CO2 emissions than petrol or diesel. Moreover, it discusses the environmental and socio-economic impacts of increasing biofuel feedstocks, which may generate human food shortages, especially in developing countries.
