This note examines the impact of wildlife diseases, the status of surveillance in the UK and the options to strengthen policies. It points out that wildlife diseases can have negative consequences for biodiversity, human and livestock health, animal welfare and the economy. The paper argues UK wildlife disease surveillance is poorly coordinated. The lack of a cohesive approach stems from a division of responsibility and a dominant focus on livestock and human health.
