This note examines specific cases of deep-seabed mineral extraction, bioprospecting and CO2 storage, and highlights the dichotomy of promoting economic development while protecting the deep sea environment. It notes that new technologies afford unprecedented access to deep waters, revealing a wealth of new habitats and organisms, and also present opportunities for exploiting new resources.
