This note describes the importance of promoting health behavior change and the challenges to such change in the UK. It argues that behaviors such as stopping smoking, moderation of alcohol intake, healthy eating and physical activity can reduce the risks of developing serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and reduce health-care costs. However, promoting the uptake of healthier behavior presents challenges, both at the individual and population levels.
