This note discusses the challenges facing electricity networks in the UK, taking into consideration government priorities to secure energy supplies and reduce emissions. It discusses barriers to progress and policy options such as possible reforms and designing incentive structures. It considers, moreover, integrating renewable power generators in rural areas and incorporating small-scale generation.
