This note describes the structure of the internet and summarizes the debate over its management. It also discusses the prospects for international governance of the internet, following the first meeting of the UN-sponsored Internet Governance Forum in October 2006. It highlights the role of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as a central point of contention.
