This paper examines the technologies available and the environmental, economic and technological challenges involved in the deployment of marine renewables in the UK. It outlines the UK's potential marine renewable resources and examines the wave and tide technologies that are being developed in the field, as well as the funding and policy implications thereof. The paper concludes that while marine renewables are unlikely to contribute significantly to the 2020 renewable targets, the prospects are better in the medium term as the technologies mature.
