This paper discusses the importance of taking an 'evidence-based' approach to policymaking. The author argues that integrating scientific evidence into decision-making is an invaluable instrument for policymaking. Whereas the natural and social sciences are increasingly taken into account, history is not yet widely used. Thus, the author considers how history could help to inform decisions on key scientific and technological policy issues, helping policymakers to learn from past successes and failures.
