This paper explores data encryption techniques, their applications and reliability. It discusses controversial government proposals to give public authorities in the UK additional powers under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, relating to the handling of encrypted data in criminal investigations. The paper also presents the drawbacks and future developments of encryption.
