This POSTnote outlines trends in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and the possible reasons for them, and looks at their significance in terms of supply and demand of STEM qualifications. The paper also examines issues concerned with closures of university STEM departments and government policies designed to reverse these trends. The paper argues that government, education providers and business need to work together to improve the attractiveness of STEM qualifications and careers.
