Dec 2006

This publication examines Belarusian foreign policy with a particular focus on China, Iran and Syria since the accession of President Alexander Lukashenko in 1994. The author argues that these countries have the potential to become important economic and political partners for Belarus despite western pressure to keep Belarus isolated. The publication concludes that there has been a deepening of relations at all levels and those looking for Lukashenko's regime to collapse have not paid enough attention to Belarus' re-orientation of contemporary foreign policy toward China, Iran and Syria.
