Feb 2005
This publication examines political and strategic developments the Transdniestria region and their impact on Moldovan security politics. The author argues that Russia has assisted the Dniestr region in its consolidation of power and status through development of a viable legal and illegal economy, strong symbols of statehood and sustainable military formations. The publication concludes that because the EU is dependent on Russia for energy supplies, it cannot force a resolution to Moldovan insecurity and underlying tensions in the region without support from Moscow.
