This note examines geo^-engineering as a means of offsetting the effects of greenhouse gas emissions. It also outlines the key issues involved in the research and funding of such technologies, particularly in the public sector. The paper assesses the benefits and costs of individual geo-engineering techniques and examines their potential to be funded and commercialized internationally. The paper concludes by arguing that a modest research program, with a UK contribution of GBP10 million-GBP20 million (US$14 million-US$29 million), could advance relevant knowledge significantly.
