This paper examines the applicability of 'sustainable security' to the North Africa and Middle East region. The central premise of sustainable security, according to the authors, is that all the consequences of insecurity cannot be controlled successfully, rather the focus should be on resolving the causes. They identify three main drivers of insecurity in the region: conflict and occupation, resource management and marginalization and social exclusion.
