This report examines political participation and public accountability in the cases of South Africa and Zimbabwe. The authors argue that context specific participatory governance systems and public participation mechanisms facilitate better informed policy decisions. They state that it increases the responsiveness and accountability of government departments, improves public service delivery and human security, and reduces the need for violence as a means of articulating grievances.
