This paper contends that the international order that was crucial for Germany’s success in becoming a stable democracy and economic power is currently looking fragile. However, the text´s author also believes that Berlin can only see one way forward, and that´s to work to preserve the existing order. Indeed, he contends that this position is shaping the three key dimensions of an emerging German grand strategy as they seek to 1) keep the US engaged in Europe; 2) maintain the EU; and 3) confront the threat posed by China and Russia to the status quo.
