This paper investigates the role of ethnic and religious diversity in contemporary European nation building. More specifically, it examines 1) the boundaries along which conflicts around the meaning of national identity have arisen; 2) how increases in ethnic diversity have affected national identity; and 3) how religious and ethnic identities interact in dialogues on nationhood. To address these issues, the text particularly focuses on ideas of nationhood in Norway, France and the UK, where increased ethnic and religious diversity have challenged the boundaries of national identity.
