This brief argues that democratic cultures can act as safeguards against radicalization, but only if they make room for counterculture movements and radical political projects, even if they challenge democracy itself. This stance, the text's author continues, will 1) encourage fringe element to step out into ‘bright’ public spaces, and 2) generate healthy public debate about the “utopian” ideas put forward by radical and anti-democratic forces.
