This brief argues that the ‘light-footprint approach’ adopted by NATO forces in Afghanistan is not working. But crucially, following the Alliance’s recently announced increase in troop numbers, the text´s also contends that it is not necessarily the lack of boots on the ground that is doing the most damage to chances of mission success either. Instead, she believes the main reason that for the stalemate in Afghanistan is the lack of political will to bring the different parties engaged in the conflict to the negotiation table.
