Amidst ongoing speculation about a possible ‘grand bargain’ between the West and Russia over Ukraine, this commentary argues that such a deal is not possible. While Europe may desire a more pragmatic modus vivendi with Moscow, thoroughly ‘freezing’ the conflict in the Donbas region remains a critical precondition for any deal.
