Since the start of the twenty-first century, the number of international migrants has grown rapidly from 173 million in 2000, to 244 million in 2015, and to 258 million in 2017. So how did we get here and how can we understand this phenomenon? To help provide answers, this book provides a critical overview of recent migration flows by looking at the philosophical history of the migrant, the language and framing of migration, and narratives of security, sovereignty and identity. The text also looks at why people flee, what happens during their flight, how actors including the EU, Australia and others have responded to mass migratory movements, and more.
