Amid rumors about a pending grand bargain between the US and Russia on the interminable conflict in Donbas Oblast, this comment looks at how Europe should defend its own interests if the Western consensus on the breakaway region collapses. The text’s author ultimately concludes that any attempt by Moscow and Washington to impose a top-down solution to the fighting won’t lead to sustainable peace. In response, European states have no option but to pursue consistency and consensus in their support for Ukraine.
