According to this brief, the new Trump administration presents major challenges to the diplomatic and security alignments that have defined Britain’s place in the world since the 1940s. The most egregious problems, argues the text’s author, are that Trump’s erratic presentation of his own international priorities will compel London to 1) spend a lot of time reacting to pronouncements and events rather than developing clear post-Brexit strategies and policies of its own, and 2) continuously scratch its head over how it fits into Trump’s ‘America First’ global agenda. Given these problems, the author concludes that it’s time for a new special relationship between the UK and its main bilateral ally.
