How do I apply?

Are you interested in a specialised Master’s programme or a programme, which is not consecutive to your Bachelor’s programme? Find out early about the prerequisites for your desired programme and identify the documents you will need for your application.

You must apply in the standard way for the following programmes:

  • A consecutive Master’s degree programme in a discipline other than that of your Bachelor’s degree, if this progression has not be regularised in the respective programme regulations (e.g. BSc Physics -> MSc Mathematics; BSc Biology -> MSc Food Science and Nutrition)
  • All specialised Master’s degree programmes (Atmosperic and Climate Science; Biomedical Engineering; Biotechnology; Comparative and International Studies; Computational Biology and Bioinformatics; Data Science; Energy Science and Technology; History and Philosophy of Science; Integrated Building Systems; Landscape Architecture; Micro- and Nanosystems; Neural Systems and Computation; Nuclear Engineering; Pharmaceutical Sciences; Quantum Engineering; Robotics, Systems and Control; Science, Technology and Policy; Statistics)

For a successful application we recommend that you consider the following points:

Please inform yourself in advance about the Master’s degree programme which interests you:

If you are admitted, to progress to Master’s degree studies you must complete your Bachelor’s studies before lectures begin, or (if you are pursuing an ETH Bachelor’s degree) you must have earned the number of credits required for the Bachelor’s degree in your discipline.

There are two distinct application windows for our Master’s degree programmes.

If you wish to apply for the Excellence Scholarship and Opportunity Programme you have to apply during the first application period: 1 November to 15 December.

All other ETH Bachelor's students may apply during the subsequent second application period: 1 to 30 April.

However, we recommend that all candidates apply in the first application window: you receive the decision earlier, and can plan your next steps. At ETH Zurich it is only possible to enter Master’s degree studies in the Autumn Semester.

Collect all of the required application documents early on. This applies particularly to additional degree-specific documents such as the CV or the letter of motivation.

For further information on the documents required by your desired Master’s degree programme, and the format in which they should be uploaded, see here.

When you have collected all of the required documents, apply for your desired Master’s degree programme online via eApply. Please fill out the online application form completely.

At the start you will be asked to register using your ETH login details. Then you will be guided through the online application procedure step by step. Please note that your entries must be substantiated by uploads of the required documents (CV, official academic records, etc.). You will receive a confirmation by email as soon as you submit your online application.

You may apply simultaneously for three different degree programmes per semester.

To online application

Applicants who progress directly to Master’s degree studies after taking their ETH Zurich Bachelor’s degree pay no application fee.

If they re-enter or change degree programme at Master’s level, an administrative fee of CHF 50 is charged. Please understand that this fee is not refundable.

This fee must be paid by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or PostFinance card when you submit your online application.

If your application has been submitted by the deadline and is complete it will be screened by the Admissions Office.

If it satisfies all of the formal criteria, the application is forwarded to the Admissions Committee of your desired degree programme for evaluation. This committee assesses it for content and checks how far your previous education corresponds to the profile of requirements set out in the appendix to the respective programme regulations.

Finally, the Admissions Committee formulates a request for acceptance or rejection and sends this to the Admissions Office. Please note that this process may take some weeks.

After your application has been screened by the Admissions Office and assessed by the Admissions Committee, a written admission decision is sent to you for downloading on eApply (see calendar dates).

Decisions are normally issued within 2-3 months of the submission deadline.
