Legal information on lecture recording
At ETH Zurich, there is an infrastructure for recording lectures and events at request in around 80 lecture halls and a handful of seminar rooms. The equipment installed to enable this (digital recording devices, cameras) is only used for this purpose; it is not used for the surveillance of rooms or persons. The technical infrastructure is operated by the Multimedia Production group of IT Services.
The following information describes which technology is used and what effects this has on use of the rooms. On the corresponding subpages, we explain what lecturers, students and visitors to events in these lecture halls must observe if they do not wish to be recorded (image/sound).
Identification
The rooms shown in the list can be identified via a camera symbol at the entrance. The QR code that is also displayed is linked to this page. By using and entering such a room, you accept the terms and conditions described here.
Recordings
Recordings will include
- the projected digital signal and/or
- a video (fixed or manned camera) of the projection area (board, overhead projection, podium area including speakers, in approx. 20 lecture halls),
- and audio in the lecture halls (if the microphone is switched on).
Recordings start a couple of minutes prior to the official times of a lecture/event and end a little later; they will be published in an edited version on the video portal of ETH Zurich, usually the day after the event.
Backup camera
In addition to the primary recordings system the lecture halls have a backup camera at the back of the hall. These record video images during the operating hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and, in the event of specific requests for recording, also outside of these hours, which are combined with the audio recordings in the lecture halls. This video shows the digital projection area. The backup is only published if the primary recording system did not work.

Below we provide further details on the recordings and, where necessary, explain how you should behave in order to ensure no image of you is transmitted or recorded while in the lecture hall.
