Returning to work

As an expectant mother, you (and your partner) should start at an early stage to think about how you plan to balance work and family life after your child is born. You and your supervisor should discuss the various options for returning to work or ending your contract.

Please note that you are only permitted by law to return to work at the earliest eight weeks after the birth, and you must give your express consent if you wish to return before the 16th week.

Changing your employment contract

As a basic principle, the content of your present employment contract continues to be binding once maternity leave has ended. Therefore, both you and your supervisor must agree to any changes or amendments to the contract that is in place, otherwise the employment contract must be terminated.

It may be possible to reduce your level of employment with the consent of your supervisor and taking the situation at work into account. However, there is no fundamental legal right to this arrangement.
