New AVETH president elected
Florian Thöle has been named as the new President of AVETH, the Academic Association of Scientific Staff at ETH Zurich. On Tuesday, the members of AVETH voted him in to succeed the outgoing President Lars Büthe.
Having served as President of AVETH for one and a half years, Lars Büthe, a doctoral student from the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET), has now stepped down from the post. The AVETH members thanked him for his efforts at the annual general assembly on the Hönggerberg campus on Tuesday evening, when they also elected his successor, Florian Thöle, a doctoral student from the Department of Materials (D-MATL). Thöle was already a member of the AVETH Board and leader of the association’s Politics Working Group (PoWoG).
Along with Florian Thöle, the following people have been elected to specific posts on the Board:
- Thomas Gersdorf, a doctoral student from the Department of Management, Technology and Economics (D-MTEC) and former treasurer of AVETH, has been appointed Vice President.
- Arik Jung, a doctoral student from the Department of Physics (D-PHYS), is the new treasurer.
- Lysie Champion, a doctoral student from the Department of Biology (D-BIOL), is the new President of Telejob, having previously served as treasurer.
- Bernd Deffner, a doctoral student from D-MATL, is now the treasurer of Telejob.
The following members have also been elected to the Board:
- Stefano Duca, Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS): Events.
- Christian Mathis, D-MATL: Counselling.
- Katie Matlack, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT): Postdocs.
- Gautam Munglani, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG): Communications.
- Isabella Schalko, D-BAUG: Politics.
- Remo Senn, Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (D-CHAB): Politics.
The AVETH members also noted the following milestones achieved during the past year:
- AVETH concluded a framework agreement with ETH Zurich which recognises the association as the official representative body for scientific staff at ETH Zurich.
- Since last autumn, scientific staff at ETH Zurich have had their own subject-specific associations in all departments.
- The AVETH Board streamlined its management and organisational structures and drew up new guidelines for the presidency.
- AVETH enhanced its external visibility and redesigned the “AVETHnews” annual report.
- AVETH’s archive holdings were handed over to the ETH-Bibliothek.
- The number of AVETH members has grown at a yearly rate of 11 per cent since 2011.
- AVETH renewed its cooperation with ACIDE, the Association of Research Scientists and Lecturers at EPFL.
- AVETH’s collaboration with the ETH Career Center on the “Long Night of the Career” event and the “ETH get hired” initiative proved successful.
