Fire brigade operation in the Chemistry Building (HCI) due to fog development

This morning, a fire alarm was triggered in a laboratory in the Chemistry Building (HCI). The cause of the alarm was not a fire, however, but vacuum pumps emitting oily aerosols, which led to heavy fog. The laboratory was accessible again a good two hours later.

The fire brigade was quickly called out this morning after a fire alarm was triggered shortly before 7 a.m. in the Chemistry Building (HCI) on the Hönggerberg. After a while it was clear: it was not a fire that had broken out in a laboratory on the H floor, but fortunately only a strong development of fog. The cause was vacuum pumps emitting oily aerosols. Since the ventilation system in the HCI building is currently being overhauled, these aerosols could not be extracted and therefore spread throughout the entire interior.

After only two hours, the laboratory could be reopened – without any damage to property or persons.
