Political action and the role of researchers – for or against?

In times of crisis, policymakers rely on the expertise of scientists to an extra degree. But should researchers also get involved in political debates? Or should they limit their communication to their research findings? Have your say on the matter in the next issue of life magazine!

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, but also when it comes to the issue of climate change, the line between advisory roles and the political influence of scientists has become increasingly blurred.

What do you think? Should researchers focus on their core activity, i.e. science, offering up solid facts and leaving the evaluation and decision-making to policymakers? Or should they use their expertise to recommend specific courses of action and consciously influence political decisions? Should they play an active role in shaping political opinions or leave this to the media?

We are looking for voices in support of and opposing the involvement of researchers in politics for our For & Against column in life magazine. Would you like to share your opinion about scientists’ role in society with the ETH community? Send your most convincing arguments to by 10 August. We can help you put your piece together for publication. One “for” piece and one “against” piece will each be published in the next edition of life magazine on 22 October.

We look forward to hearing your arguments!
