The Chemistry Olympiad starts on Monday

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is being held for the first time in Switzerland from 16 to 25 July 2023 and will take place on the ETH Hönggerberg campus. Over 300 talented young chemists from around the world will spend ten days putting their specialist knowledge to the test, compete for coveted medals and get to know both Switzerland and ETH better.

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) starts on Monday, 17 July 2023 and is being held for the first time ever in Switzerland and at ETH Zurich. Pupils aged between 16 and 19 address questions from the world of chemistry at this annual global competition and put their skills to the test in separate five-hour theory and practical examinations. Over 300 of these talented young chemists are expected on the Hönggerberg campus in the coming week, together with around 600 mentors and voluntary assistants.

A love of chemistry and a fun supporting programme

The objective of the International Olympiad is to awaken an interest and enthusiasm for chemistry among pupils around the world. In addition, the IChO aims to facilitate contact between the young participants and potential employers, dialogue with pupils and experts throughout the world and friendships beyond national frontiers.

Moreover, the leisure programme also plays an important role: alongside the two exam days on Wednesday and Friday, participants will have sufficient time to get to know both ETH Zurich and Switzerland better during tours and outings.

Focus on teamwork

The motto of this year’s IChO is “Let’s find solutions together!”. This highlights the importance of chemistry for the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, while at the same time underlining how crucial team collaboration is for seeking and finding innovative solutions. We wish all participants in this year’s IChO every success!
