Emanuel Christ’s research: In the age of globalization, the metropolises are experiencing unprecedented growth. This social and economic dynamic necessitates and facilitates the development of contemporary cities; this is the challenge of our time. The architecture of the city is our object of research. Using the method of typological transfer, he examines the potential of existing city architecture as a building block for a sustainable, dense and urban city of the future.
Emanuel Christ has been a Full Professor of Architecture and Design in the Department of Architecture since 2018.
He was born in Basel in 1970.
Emanuel Christ studied architecture at ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne and the HdK (today, the Berlin University of the Arts). He graduated from ETH Zurich under Professor Hans Kollhoff in 1998. In 2002-2003, Emanuel Christ lectured at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst (HGK) in Basel.
From 2000 to 2005, he worked as a Senior Assistant at the ETH Studio Basel under Professors Roger Diener, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, and Marcel Meili. From 2005 to 2009, he was a guest professor at various architecture institutes: Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, GB; Accademia di Architettura Mendrisio, Design Studio, and the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Norway. From 2010-2015 he was an assistant professor at ETH Zurich, 2015-2017 visiting professor at Harvard GSD. Since 2018 he is a full professor at ETH Zurich. In 2021, he was appointed Kenzo Tange Design Critic in Architecture at Harvard GSD.

1998 Emanuel Christ founded the architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein in Basel together with Christoph Gantenbein.
Emanuel Christ is married, has three children and lives in Basel.
