Rector's Recommendations for the Autumn Semester 2023

Teaching in the autumn semester 2023

ETH Zurich sees itself as a face-to-face university and has gradually returned to its proven campus life after the pandemic. This means that the Rector's recommendations for teaching in the academic year 2022/23 can be lifted to a large extent. In the autumn semester of 2023, lecturers will thus again have more flexibility in the design of their teaching and can choose the teaching mode at their own discretion. Only the approval requirement for purely digitally delivered courses will remain in place.

During the pandemic, we learned a lot about the opportunities and challenges of different teaching modes and the different learning strategies of our students. We want to continue to build on these insights regarding the different teaching settings such as classical or interactive lectures, hybrid scenarios, preparatory or follow-up online materials including possible recordings in a didactically and logistically sensible way.

The teaching committees play a central role in this. They ensure the studyability of courses and programmes and pay attention to appropriate teaching modes within the framework of quality assurance. Support for the optimal design of teaching from a didactic and logistical point of view is provided both by the administrative department Educational Development and -technology (LET) and by the departmental educational developers.

In the case of purely digital learning units, it must be ensured that, as part of the departmental course scheduling, students are provided with a suitable room on campus to participate in the course unit.

With regard to the planning of the autumn semester 2023, please be advised that the information in the course catalogue (VVZ) is legally binding. The published information must correspond to the lived practice and the teaching materials must be accessible via the course catalogue.
