Remuneration for Teaching Assignments

Internal lecturers

Internal lecturers are not entitled to remuneration. Regardless of their contracted working hours, internal lecturers are:

  • ETH Zurich employees
  • Employees at the ETH domain research institutes (WSL, EAWAG, PSI and EMPA) and EPFL
  • Employees working at ETHZ-UZH joint institutes

Exception: Substitute lecturers are remunerated for 80% of the fixed rates, for a maximum of 4 consecutive semesters, but not more than CHF 6,000 a semester.

External lecturers

External lecturers receive a fixed sum for the semester, unless no remuneration is requested. This applies to retired professors, retired honorary professors, lecturers and senior lecturers who are not employed at ETH or within the ETH domain.

There are two remuneration categories:

  • Remuneration transferred to the lecturer’s personal bank account: payment from which social security contributions are deducted.
  • The lecturer’s employer issues an invoice: The renumeration is transferred to the lecturer’s employer without any deduction of social security contributions.

The three course types Independent project (A), Diploma thesis (D) and Revision course/private study (R) may be remunerated according to the “Download Directives on remuneration for assistance in student performance assessment at ETH Zurich (in German) (PDF, 82 KB)”. Lecturers do not require teaching assignments for these courses.

When a number of lecturers teach the same courses they are remunerated according to the number of hours they teach.

If the same course runs more than once in the same semester, only one full course may be remunerated. Repeat courses are remunerated at a rate of 0.7.

Contracts

As a rule, ETH Zurich concludes an unlimited part-time working contract with external lecturers. The department responsible for the lecturers requests Human Resources to conclude and terminate the contracts.

In the case of external lecturers whose employers send an invoice to ETH Zurich, the ETH concludes a contract directly with the company (Ltd. or limited liability) at which the lecturer is employed.

If a teaching assignment will not be continued, the department must immediately inform the lecturer and the Room and Course Scheduling Office.

Rates for remunerating external lecturers

According to the "Directives on the issuing of teaching assignments and remuneration of lecturers at ETH Zurich" (in German) (PDF, 42 KB). In CHF per semester hour.
