PBLabs
Enabling project-based education
PBLabs (Project-Based Labs) is a strategic initiative of the Rectorate. We enable project-based education (PBE) to empower our graduates as they navigate a world of change and tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
We provide expertise and support for lecturers, educational developers, and department representatives. Whether you already provide PBE formats and are looking to improve and scale them, or if you want to start something new, we are here to help with advice, consulting, manuals, and best practices.
Building a coherent and consistent PBE approach across the institution will require a shared understanding. When is PBE an effective approach – and when not? What are the dos and don’ts? How can the desired learning outcomes be ensured? We do not claim to have all the answers yet but are confident that we can generate valuable insights and learnings by fostering a community of practice.
Many PBE formats rely on trained coaches. PBLabs will facilitate, coordinate, and foster the development of coaches at ETH, as well as connect the different entities involved in coaching training with each other. We will maintain a pool of students who are interested in coaching opportunities. Through the pool, we will be able to connect lecturers, who are in need of coaches, with suitable candidates.
A space for project-based education
Project-based education often benefits from a more flexible teaching context than a traditional lecture theatre can provide. That is why PBLabs has designed and implemented a dedicated space for project-based education at the RZ building (Clausiusstrasse 59). The space is now ready for teaching!
PBLabs RZ offers flexible solutions for a variety of settings (such as group work, break-out rooms, lectures, and prototyping) that are commonly used in PBE formats. PBLabs will be a laboratory and testbed for ETH's teaching environments of the future.
This space is not ours; it is yours! Like everything we do, it will change, transform, and adjust according to the needs that arise.
Room booking applications can be made via external pagethis formcall_made.
PBLabs RZ is located on the D-Floor of the RZ building.

Orientation
From an inspiring flagship to scalable solutions with widespread impact
For the past two years, PBLabs has organised ETH Week. This flagship course, which had eight editions in total, successfully demonstrated the potential for project-based education to foster a broad set of competencies and has inspired a variety of innovations in educational development at ETH. It has provided great visibility and generated many learnings on PBE. Now it is time for a new chapter with an increased focus on scalability.
Tackling the challenge of scalability is particularly important because project-based teaching demands more/different resources compared to traditional lecture formats. Widespread implementation of PBE throughout the university can therefore only be achieved with cost- and resource-effective solutions.
A variety of courses, modules, teaching styles, and educational formats exist across ETH. We will promote some of the most exciting and creative PBE-related teaching that ETH offers through our communication channels (Instagram, LinkedIn, Newsletter).
Feel free to reach out if you would like us to showcase our teaching, or in case you have any other needs, questions, or ideas. Together, let’s enable project-based education at ETH!
