This paper reviews efforts to encourage the use of alternatives to cesium chloride in blood irradiation as a way of reducing the use of high-risk radioactive sources. It discusses the risks and benefits of using cesium chloride in blood irradiation, and examines the most widely accepted alternative blood irradiation technologies. The authors then review US policy on cesium chloride sources, in particular the Task Force on Radiation Source Protection and Security’s reports, and assess their implementation. They also offer recommendations for shifting to alternative technologies.
