This paper examines the spread of the Islamic faith throughout Africa both from a historical and a modern revivalist aspect. The different chapters discuss the challenges of negotiating pluralist politics in ethnically and religiously complex regions. Accordingly, questions concerning what texts, laws, principles and cultural practices are to guide norms and provide a basis for social organization are at the forefront of this volume.
