Welcome to the Professorship of Forest Ecology

This professorship is chaired by Prof. Dr. Harald Bugmann and is home to four groups studying diverse aspects of forest ecology and forest management.

The Professorship of Forest Ecology aims (1) to advance the scientific understanding of the structure, functioning and long-term dynamics of forest ecosystems, and (2) to provide evidence-based decision support for sustainable forest management regimes in the face of global change.

Stand and Landscape Dynamics

We aim to better understand the key processes that are determining long-term forest dynamics.

Dendrochronology and Phenology

Investigate and understand ecological processes based on tree rings, forest inventories and phenological data.

Dendrology and Vegetation Science

Know the woody plant species and understand how they can ecologically behave and adapt.

Forest Growth and Global Change

Resilience of forests to climate change as a basis for integrative forest management and the promotion of biodiversity.

We cordially congratulate Anna Neycken on her successful PhD defence!

Welcome, Dr. Francesco Giardina!

We warmly welcome Dr. Francesco Giardina to the Forest Ecology group! Francesco's work has been focusing on investigating plant-water relationships at different scales, applying several statistical methods including AI. He will use this expertise to study forest dynamics as part of a European project focused on evaluating the effects of natural rewilding of abandoned agricultural land on carbon sequestration and biodiversity.
