ETH Global Lecture Series: Mars, MOXIE and the Future of Human Exploration
Zurich, 25 September 2019 - Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will discuss some of the challenges involved in exploring Mars, including the need for using local resources to support human exploration.

external page Professor Jeffrey Hoffman (MIT) will discuss some of the challenges involved in exploring Mars, including the need for using local resources to support human exploration (In Situ Resource Utilization, or ISRU). He will describe the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) that will travel to the surface of Mars on NASA’s Mars2020 rover and will, for the first time ever, demonstrate ISRU on another planet by electrolyzing carbon dioxide from the Mars atmosphere to produce oxygen.
The lecture will be followed by a networking apéro.

external page Jeffrey Hoffman teaches in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A member of the U.S. Astronauts Hall of Fame, Hoffman was the first person to spend 1,000 hours on Space Shuttle missions, helped repair the Hubble Telescope, and designed advanced space suits and tools for building the International Space Station. He became NASA’s European representative and continues to serve NASA as a deputy principal investigator for the 2020 mission to Mars.
