Additional information
Helmut Krueger was Professor Ordinarius of Ergonomics and director of the former Institute for Hygiene and Applied Physiology at ETH Zurich. He retired in 2005.
Following studies in physics, zoology and medicine at the Universities of Munich and Hamburg, he competed his habilitation and venia legendi in the area of applied physiology at the Technical University of Munich. In 1980 he was named professor at the Institute for Applied Physiology at the Technical University of Munich and granted the right to the additional title of occupational physician. In 1983 his appointment to the post of Professor for Ergonomics at the ETH Zurich followed. Connected with this appointment was the directorship of the Institute for Hygiene and Applied Physiology.
His teaching activities included the areas of general physiology, basic anatomy and physiology, prophylactic medicine in adults, ecology, ergonomics, perceptual physiology and occupational physiology. His principle interest were the development of an inter-university postgraduate course in "Work and Health", intended to offer further education for occupational hygienists and occupational physicians. In Munich his main research focus was biomedical technology and ergonomics. His interests were chiefly in applied perceptual physiology (visual, acoustic and vibration perception), fine motor behavior (hand-eye) coordination) and questions on hardware and software ergonomics. In the forefront of the software ergonomics research are questions on cognition and navigation in public domain information systems. He also was actively involved in diverse scientific societies, scientific advisory boards and public bodies.
