Sonia Seneviratne, Professor of Land Climate Dynamics at ETH Zurich, has received an honorary doctorate in natural sciences from the University of Utrecht. At the 387th Dies Natalis, the university's birthday celebration on 27 March 2023, the university acknowledged her pioneering research in mechanisms leading to heatwaves and droughts in both present and future climate.

Besides Seneviratne, climate scientist Corinne Le Quéré was also honoured with an honorary doctorate. "Climate crisis – this is not a celebratory theme, but we feel it is vital to debate on this issue," says a statement from Utrecht University. And that we need to think fundamentally about who we are, our consumption patterns and our relationship with nature.
