Tomas Fiala receives Branco Weiss Fellowship
Dr. Tomas Fiala, postdoc at the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry (D-CHAB) receives the prestigious Branco Weiss Fellowship in 2023, awarded by ETH Zurich to outstanding postdocs.
Dr. Tomas Fiala, postdoc in the Wennemers Group at the LOC (Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences), is one of the eight researchers who received the prestigious Branco Weiss Fellowship in 2023. His research aims to uncover how protein post-translational modifications direct the immune response in the brain, affecting brain homeostasis and the development of neurodegenerative disorders. Such diseases, which include Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, affect more than 50 million people worldwide, and the number is growing. A better understanding of the molecular details of the processes that activate and regulate cerebral immunity could help combat neurodegeneration.
The followship allows Tom Fiala to pursue his research for up to five years at an institute of his choice anywhere in the world. The fellowship program was initiated and funded by the Swiss entrepreneur Dr. Branco Weiss. Fellows receive the fellowship to independently pursue their personal vision of a specific scientific project. The fellowship is based at ETH Zurich and is awarded to outstanding postdocs.
