Permanent appointment of scientific staff

ETH Zurich attaches great importance to the principle of rotating appointments in the science sector. This makes it possible to offer young, motivated scientists at ETH Zurich a springboard for a successful career and at the same time to act flexibly in the ever more rapidly changing teaching and research environment.

Experienced staff with permanent appointments ensure continuity and stability in the research and teaching units. The authority to approve the permanent employment of researchers lies with the Executive Board.

The Executive Board bases its assessment of applications for permanent employment on a comprehensive clarification of the situation and makes its approval dependent on a number of criteria.

Scientists proposed for permanent employment are distinguished by particularly qualified performance and take over project management and coordination functions with independent responsibility.

The application must show the candidate's professional, methodological and social qualifications in teaching, research and scientific service.

In addition to a detailed curriculum vitae as well as the list of publications and a list of the teaching and research tasks performed, the application should also contain information on the personnel structure of the professorship/institute and on the further career development of the proposed person.

The Executive Board only decides on applications that have been discussed and approved by the departmental management. The applications must be submitted by the head of the department.

Applications for the permanent employment of scientific staff are examined with regard to the following criteria:

  • Professional qualifications of the candidate
  • Experience of the candidate (stays abroad, private sector, etc.)
  • Specialisation and future of the candidate
  • Development or future of the specialisation
  • Commitment in teaching
  • Number of permanent academic staff in the institute
  • Age difference between the candidate and the professor

The application for a permanent position submitted by the head of the department is formally and substantively reviewed by a preparatory team and submitted to the Executive Board for a decision.

This team includes representatives from the Office for Faculty Affairs, the Office of Research and the Rector's Staff. Coordination is carried out by the Head of Human Resources.
