Holiday activities for kids

Pro Juventute Ferienplausch

During the summer holidays, ProJuventute organises events for children and youths aged from 6 to 16 years on the platform "external pageFeriennet".

The office of equal opportunities supports activities at ETH Zurich with a financial contribution that specifically encourage young girls’ interest in natural sciences and engineering (MINT). Interested ETH organisations are invited to apply in spring of each year by sending in a short description of the planned event, considering especially the encouragement of girls’ interest in MINT. For detailed information please contact us.

Date and registration

Parents can register interested children for ETH courses from beginning of May directly at the website of the "external pageFerienplausch Zürich und Umgebung" (German only).

Selection of past workshops for children

During two days, 20 kids soldered capacitors, LED lights, and microchips onto a prefabricated circuit board and thus created their own dancing robots, which they could design and decorate according to their own imagination. The children programmed choreographies for their robots, so that they moved and danced to the kids’ favorite music. Of course, the kids could take their robots home at the end. What is air pressure, how do clouds form, and why does it rain at all? For one day, you will conduct research together with meteorologists of the ETH Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science: You will carry out experiments on air pressure and humidity, build your own measuring instruments and release a registering balloon to measure air humidity and temperature of the atmosphere. On the Experimentiertag 2012 (German only), two girls went up to the highest ETH building and let a self-built registered balloon go.

At the ETH laboratory of geotechnical engineering, you can straight away get down to work: What is required to prevent your newly constructed building from sliding down the hill, and what has to be taken into account about the underground water flow when planning your construction? In the end, you will all build a dam together. Is it going to withstand the water pressure?

Further options

The project external page"CreativeLabZ" aims to give young people a space for creativity and to inspire them for natural sciences. It was developed by the Zurich-Basel Plant Science Center, a competence center of the three universities ETH Zurich, University of Zurich and University of Basel. Workshop modules based on elements from science and art are developed for young people between 12 and 16 years and are offered in holiday camps or other extracurricular learning venues.
