The Paul Bernays Lectures are an annual lecture series about the philosophy of the exact sciences. This lecture series is established in honour of the eminent logician, mathematician and philosopher of logic and mathematics Paul Bernays who was engaged in teaching and research at ETH from 1934 to 1959. The series was founded in 2012 by Professor Giovanni Sommaruga (D-GESS).
The theme of this year’s Bernays Lectures is:
“The quest for mathematical understanding of artificial intelligence"
They will be held by Prof. Sanjeev Arora, Charles C. Fitzmorris Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University.
The lectures will take place in Room HG E7 of ETH Zurich, main building, Rämistr. 101, Zurich:
- Lecture 1, Wednesday, 31 August 2022, 5 pm: “Tour d’Horizon of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning today"
- Lecture 2, Thursday, 1 September 2022, 5pm: "Deep Learning: Attempts toward mathematical understanding"
All lectures are given in English and Lecture 1 is aimed at a general audience.
