Even if the Ordinance on Doctoral Studies permits doctoral theses in German, French, Italian and English, good knowledge of English is always essential. On that behalf the external pageLanguage Center of UZH and ETH Zurich offers also very useful courses in Academic Writing and external pageone-to-one consultations with a writing lecturer.

However, because courses at Bachelor’s degree level are mostly held in German and courses at Master’s level in some degree programmes are also partially in German, knowledge of German can be desirable or even imperative. In addition, learning German makes integration easier, extends your horizons and connects you to a new culture. It can also be a prerequisite for a career in an international company in Switzerland after you complete your doctorate.
