Progressing from a Bachelor programme to a Master programme
You would like to progress from an ETH Bachelor’s degree programme to a ETH Master’s degree programme.
For some Master’s degree programmes you can enrol directly via myStudies, for others you must apply.
NOTE
If you have deregistered from ETH Zurich after successfully completing your Bachelor and wish to continue with a Master, you must apply for re-entry.
A consecutive Master's degree programme is a Master with the same field of study as the Bachelor's degree programme (e.g. Physics BSc > Physics MSc).
There are also consecutive Master's degree programmes with a different field of study than the Bachelor's degree programme (e.g. Mechanical Engineering BSc > Management, Technology and Economics MSc).
For those Master’s degree programmes it is defined in the annex of the relevant Master’s regulation, which Bachelor's degrees qualify for an admission without additional requirements (without application).
If you fulfil the requirements to progress to a consecutive Master's degree programme, as described in the appendix of the respective Master's regulations, you can enrol for the Master directly via myStudies (see further information under ‘Time of enrolment’).
Non-consecutive Master’s degree programme
A non-consecutive Master's degree programme is a Master with a different field of study than the Bachelor's degree programme (e.g. Physics BSc > Chemistry MSc), for which an admission without additional requirements (without application) is not possible.
An overview of the non-consecutive Master's degree programmes can be found via the website Range of degree programmes.
For non-consecutive degree programmes, you must apply via the Admissions Office.
Specialised Master’s degree programme
Specialised Master's degree programmes have special admission prerequisites and the number of places is often limited.
An overview of the specialised Master's degree programmes can be found via the website Range of degree programmes.
For specialised Master's degree programmes, you must apply via the Admissions Office.
Joint Master's degree programmes are offered in cooperation with other universities in Switzerland and abroad.
To progress to a Joint Master's degree programme in which ETH Zurich is the ‘Leading House’, you must apply via the Admissions Office.
For all other Joint Master's degree programmes (where another university is the ‘Leading House’), other application procedures apply.
Consecutive Master’s degree programme
If you fulfil the requirements to progress to a consecutive Master's degree programme, as described in the appendix of the respective Master's regulations, you can enrol for the Master directly via myStudies.
Not all 180 ECTS are required for enrolment.
The enrolment is only possible after the release of the semester enrolment (autumn semester: approx. mid-July / spring semester: approx. mid-December) and until the end of the regular enrolment period (end of the second week of the semester).
The semester enrolment has to be continued until the final academic record has been decreed. Students who receive the final academic record for the Bachelor’s degree only after the end of the second week of the semester must enrol for a further Bachelor’s degree semester in addition to enrolling for the Master’s degree programme.
Only enrol in the Master's degree programme if you really want to start with the Master! The Master's deadline starts with the first enrolment.
If you have completed your Bachelor and would like to continue with the Master without interruption, it is important that you first enrol in the Master's degree programme and only then submit the diploma request. Once the Bachelor's degree is awarded, this results in automatic deregistration!
Other Master's degree programme / Joint-Master’s degree programme (Leading House ETH)
For Master's degree programmes for which you must apply, you can enrol for (via myStudies) once you have received an admission from the Admissions Office - provided the requirements to progress to the consecutive Master are met (see appendix of the respective Master's regulations).
The following procedure is only possible when progressing to a consecutive Master's degree programme if the Bachelor's deadline has not yet been reached.
Break without a deregistration
If you would like to take a break between your Bachelor and the effective start of your Master or, if you would like to complete an internship without being de-registered from ETH, you have two options:
- You complete your Bachelor's degree programme and enrol for the Master's degree programme for a leave of absence. Please note that the Master’s deadline starts with the first enrolment.
- You remain enrolled in the Bachelor's degree programme and wait to enrol in the Master's degree programme until you actually start with the Master. Please note that in this case you must wait to submit the diploma request for the Bachelor until you have enrolled in the Master's degree programme. This is because once the Bachelor's degree is awarded, this results in automatic deregistration!
Break with a deregistration
If you do not wish to remain enrolled between your Bachelor and the effective start of your Master, you can hand in the diploma request for the Bachelor. Once the Bachelor's degree is awarded, you will be automatically deregistered.
As soon as you wish to start the Master's degree programme, you can apply for re-entry.
