Study abroad
Bachelor's and Master's students can complete part of their studies at another university in Switzerland or abroad.
Exchange semester at a partner university
You spend a semester at a partner university and take courses. For that exchange semester you receive a small scholarship.
Project or traineeship abroad
You do a project or traineeship at another university or institute (abroad or in Switzerland). You organise and coordinate the stay yourself. The Student Exchange Office supports some projects and traineeships with a scholarship.
Other mobility types
There are more mobility options abroad or in Switzerland, e.g. short-term mobilities with ENHANCE, summer schools and more.
Switzerland and Erasmus
Switzerland is planning to rejoin the European exchange programme Erasmus+. Whether this actually happens depends on decisions made by the Swiss Parliament, which are expected in December 2026. If the decisions are in favour of Erasmus+, it will replace the current national SEMP programme.
What will change for students?
The application process as well as the offered exchange places will stay the same - the contracts with our partner universities remain in place. However, under Erasmus+ we expect higher scholarships. This also applies to students undertaking a project abroad and applying for Erasmus+ Traineeships (currently SEMP Projects & Traineeships).
Erasmus+ would be introduced in the autumn semester 2027. Until then, the SEMP scholarships apply.
What happens next?
If Switzerland does NOT join Erasmus+, everything stays the same under the European exchange programme SEMP, with the same scholarships. The Student Exchange Office of ETH Zurich has no influence over the decision. We have to wait for the outcome and can only provide further information in December at the earliest. Updates will be published on this website.
Outside of Europe and Swiss Mobility
The exchange programmes outside of Europe and the mobility within Switzerland are not affected. Projects that currently run under SEMP SMT (both inside and outside of Europe), would be carried out under Erasmus+ as of autumn semester 2027, with the Erasmus+ scholarships and processes.
