The latest honours and prizes

Annalisa Manera, Professor of Nuclear Safety and Multiphase Flows in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), has been named a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (ANS).

Marko Bjelonic, postdoctoral researcher at the Robotic Systems Lab of Professor Marco Hutter at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering of ETH Zurich, receives the Hans-Eggenberger-Prize for his doctoral thesis in wheeled-legged robotics.

For the topics of “Design and Control Optimization of Soft Gripper Mechanisms for Manipulation” and “Autonomous Navigation of Aerial Robotic Manipulators in Unstructured Indoor and Outdoor Environments”, respectively, the Professors Robert Katzschmann and Roland Siegwart receive Amazon Research Awards.

Roland Siegwart, Professor for Autonomous Systems at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, receives the Ernst-Blickle Award 2021 by the SEW-EURODRIVE Foundation. He is honored for his contribution to the development and control of robotic systems.

André Bardow, Professor of Energy and Process Systems Engineering at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, receives the Frontiers Award 2021 from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion for excellent research.

Raffaello D'Andrea, Professor at the Institute of Dynamic Systems and Control at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame. The robotics expert receives this recognition for the development of an autonomous robot-supported merchandise management system.

Robert Katzschmann, Professor of Soft Robotics at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, was elected TED Fellow 2022. Katzschmann was selected for developing adaptive robots comprising soft and living materials safe to use in a variety of tasks to improve quality of life.

Marco Mazzotti, Professor of Process Engineering at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), receives the 2021 SINTEF and NTNU CCS Award for his research on carbon dioxide capture and storage systems.

Lino Guzzella, former president of ETH Zurich and professor at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, received an honorary doctorate from the Università della Svizzera italiana. He was honored during the university’s 25th anniversary celebration.

Brad Nelson, ETH Professor of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), receives the Grand Hamdan International Award for his research on nanorobots for healthcare.

George Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) by the SIAM Fellows Selection Committee.

The American National Academy of Engineering NAE has announced the election of 18 new international members. Among them are two professors from ETH Zurich.

Konstantinos Boulouchos, ETH Professor for Aerothermochemistry and Combustion Systems, has been elected member of the Foundation Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation SNF as representative of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences SATW for the period of 2020-2023.  

George Haller, Professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, has been elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) by the APS Council of Representatives. Less than half percent of the more than 50,000 members, including all areas of physics, receive this distinction.

Salvador Pané, senior scientist at Professor Bradley Nelson’s Multi-Scale Robotics Lab at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, was honored with the Big-on-Small Award at the International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS).

David Harsch, doctoral student in Professor Pavel Hora’s group at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, was honored with the ESAFORM PhD Prize for Industrial Research. The prize is awarded annually at the International Conference on Material Forming for outstanding achievements in this field of material forming.

Scewo AG has been awarded the Innovation Prize 2019 by Idee-Suisse. The prize went to the ETH spin-off for the development of its stair-climbing electric wheelchair. Scewo emerged from a D-MAVT focus project.

Roland Siegwart, Bradley Nelson and Marco Hutter, professors at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, are honored by the Robotics and Automation Society.

Margarita Chli, Head of the Vision for Robotics Lab at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (D-MAVT), was awarded the Prix Zonta 2017. With this prize the Swiss Zonta Clubs honor women for their achievements in the scientific and technical field.

Roland Siegwart, Head of the Autonomous Systems Lab of ETH Zurich, was awarded the prestigious Google Faculty Research Award 2016 for his research in the field of Machine Perception.
