Submit request: special arrangements

Individual adjustments to study conditions can be arranged to compensate for study and examination-related difficulties. This is done by granting a reasonable adjustment. You can find information on the procedure here.

What are reasonable adjustments?

reasonable adjustments refer to specific measures aimed at compensating for existing difficulties relevant to studies and examinations. The specific degree programme requirements with regard to the study programme or examinations are not changed. The measures must be reasonable, specified in writing and defined in terms of time. Reasonable adjustments must not lead to any qualitative reduction in the learning objectives of a degree programme.

Reasonable adjustments are not an adjustment of learning objectives. Learning or examination content remains the same. Reasonable adjustment must not lead to preferential treatment compared to students without disabilities.

Who is entitled to reasonable adjustments?

For students to be entitled to reasonable adjustments, one of the following criteria must be met:

  • There must be a dysfunction that has been diagnosed by a medical specialist (according to ICD-10 criteria). The disability must be permanent. Persons with temporary impairments are not entitled to reasonable adjustments.
  • The condition or illness must be long-lasting or episodic. Chronic illnesses can be the result of a degenerative change in mental and somatic conditions or can lead to such a change.

There is no general entitlement to a specific form of special arrangement and this must be determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the requirements of the degree programme and the needs of the applicant.

What steps need to be taken into account?

  1. Please inform yourself in advance about the programme-specific and subject-specific performance requirements of your chosen degree programme as well as about the types of examinations and other proof of academic achievements (internships, laboratory, etc.) that are part of the curriculum.
  2. Before you submit an application for reasonable adjustments, an initial consultation at the Counselling & Coaching Centre is required. Please make an appointment. If you already have a medical certificate, bring it to the meeting. This way, an assessment can be made immediately to determine whether the medical certificate meets all the mandatory criteria.
  3. Complete the application form and submit the request in full. A detailed medical certificate must be enclosed.

What deadlines apply?

There are binding deadlines for submitting an application for reasonable adjustments for performance assessments. These are shortly after the start of the semester. We recommend that you submit your application well in advance.
