Semester enrolment

The release of the semester enrolment is for the autumn semester approx. mid-July, and for the spring semester approx. mid- December communicated by email.

The semester enrolment is made via myStudies. This applies to both regular semesters and semester leaves of absence. All students have to enrol!

Late enrolment as of the third week of the semester will incur a fee of CHF 50.00.

Students who fail to enrol despite a reminder will be deregistered as of the fifth week of the semester.

After enrolling you must register for your desired course units in myStudies, under “Registration”.

Please do this immediately so that teaching staff know how many students will attend their courses before the semester begins.

Do not register for more course units than needed.

You may withdraw from courses up to the end of the fourth semester week at the latest.

Please note that some course units have attendance limits. These are listed in the Course Catalogue.

If you wish or plan to interrupt your studies (e.g. for a compulsory internship, military or civilian service, exam preparation) or if you are only waiting for your graduation, you can enroll for a leave of absence on myStudies (click on the "apply for leave of absence" button).

Leave of absence

Regular enrolment can be changed to enrolment for a leave of absence up until the end of the fourth week of the semester. If you do this, you must also send an email to the Registrar’s Office briefly stating your reasons (). After that the full tuition fee is due.

As soon as the enrolment has been changed, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail. Afterwards, the confirmation of matriculation (with the remark "leave of absence") is available for download on myStudies. The old confirmation becomes invalid. Authorities must be informed about the change.

Enrolment for leave of absence is not possible for participants in teacher training ("Didaktische Ausbildung").

Register for the Bachelor's and Master's thesis as well as project and semester papers in the semester when most of the associated work will be conducted. Enrolment in a regular semester is a prerequisite (no leave of absence possible).

You must register for these in myStudies, under “Projects/papers/theses”. Exception are the degree programmes in the Department of Architecture: here registration should proceed under “Registration for course units”.

If you began the Bachelor's or Master’s thesis in the previous semester and registered for it in myStudies, but will complete it in the following semester, you may enrol for a semester’s leave of absence.

Under no circumstances should you register for the Bachelor's or Master’s thesis a second time. If you do, you will receive a semester invoice for full tuition fees.

Registering for the Bachelor's or Master’s thesis in the previous semester under “Projects/papers/theses” suffices to have the respective credits allocated and issued.

Find out early about prerequisites, application and registration procedures and deadlines at the respective university.

Example:
See “Module Mobility (Studying at More Than One University)” at the external pageUniversity of Zurich.

Language courses must be registered solely with the Language Center UZH/ETH (and not via myStudies).

Whether a language course is recognised as a SiP subject or not is indicated in both the Course Catalogue and the Language Center course programme. The latter lists two reference numbers, e.g. Arabisch I: 2695 + ETH 851-0861-00.

If you want to earn credit points, you must be regularly enrolled (no 'leave of absence' semester).

The Language Center UZH/ETH automatically transmits the results of the performance assessment to ETH Zurich, whereby only those performance assessments that have been passed are delivered. For language courses, please do not bring confirmations issued by the Language Center UZH/ETH to your Administration Office.

If a student has been issued enough credits during the Bachelor’s degree programme to progress to the respective consecutive Master’s programme, simultaneous matriculation in the consecutive Master’s programme is possible, details see "Merkblatt" (German only) at website "Übertritt Bachelor-Master"!

If this is the case the button “Master’s degree studies” in myStudies will be displayed as of the opening of the semester enrolment until the final deadline for regular enrolment.

You may matriculate directly for your consecutive Master’s degree programme and then register for course units.

Please note that the date of your first enrolment determines the deadline for completing your studies.

Double semester enrolment

Students who receive the final academic record for the Bachelor’s degree only after the end of the second week of the semester must, by the regular enrolment deadline, enrol for a further Bachelor’s degree semester in addition to enrolling for the Master’s degree programme. When enrolled double, the enrolment for the Bachelor's degree and the Master's degree have to be the same (e.g. 2 x regular enrolment or 2 x leave of absence).

Tuition and semester fees will only be charged once despite this double enrolment (Bachelor’s and consecutive Master’s degree programmes).

Applying for specialised Master’s degree programmes

In this case, your registration will not be automatically opened for the enrolment of further studies (e.g. Master, Teacher Training). Therefore

  • you cannot enroll for the following semester
  • no button "Master's degree programme" will appear in myStudies to progress from a Bachelor programme to a Master programme.

Please proceed as follows:
As soon as you have obtained the required credit points for the diploma request, submit the diploma request in myStudies and hand it in to the Study Administration Office of your study programme, with the note that you would like to enroll in the following semester or in a further study programme (Master / Teacher Training: After application/admission).   Subsequently

  • the Study Administration Office notifies the Registrar's Office that the enrolment or the enrolment for further studies can be released manually.
  • the Registrar's Office will then inform you by e-mail about the release of the enrolment.

Bachelor students, who have been excluded from the degree programme due to failure of performance assessments, have the possibility to enroll for a further semester in a so-called orientation semester (regular or leave of absence). This is intended to give students the opportunity to reorient themselves, without losing their student status. The details of the orientation semester can be found in the Downloadcorresponding directive (PDF, 136 KB) (German only).

You must submit the degree request in mystudies before your maximum duration of studies expires.
It is possible to submit the degree request during a leave of absence.

You should continue your matriculation/enrolment while the degree request is being processed by the Study Administration and until the degree becomes official.

When your degree is officially decreed you will be automatically dematriculated from the degree programme. If the final academic record is being decreed after the end of the fourth week of the semester, the semester invoice has to be paid.

The semester enrolment has to be continued until the final academic record has been decreed. An enrolment for a leave of absence is basically possible.

When enrolled double (see also 'Enrolment when progressing from a Bachelor's to a Master's degree programme'), the enrolment for the Bachelor's degree and the Master's degree have to be the same (e.g. 2 x regular enrolment or 2 x leave of absence).

If the final academic record is being decreed after the end of the fourth week of the semester, the semester invoice has to be paid.

After enrolment the ETH Card should be validated at one of the validation terminal locations.

Replacement cards can be ordered in the Webshop.

ETH Card

  • After enrolment, the confirmation of matriculation can be downloaded on myStudies for a certain period of time: It is best to save the PDF file immediately for future use!
  • For earlier semesters (up to and including the spring semester 2023), a confirmation of matriculation must still be ordered from the Registrar's Office in the old format for a charge.

The invoice will be dispatched by e-mail from the fifth week of the semester on: Please check your ETH mailbox! Please note: If you pay by eBill, you will receive an information e-mail.

For commenced semesters the tuition fees are also to be paid as of the fifth week of the semester. If the final academic record is being decreed after the end of the fourth week of the semester, the semester invoice has to be paid.

The tuition fees are charged in accordance with the external pageFee Ordinance of the ETH Domain (in German).
